Elements of Transitional

Transitional, what it is?

Transitional Elements

If my daughter was decorating the room, transitional style would check all of her "just right" pieces: Not too formal, not too fussy, not too big, not too small, not too dull and not too bright! It would blend the comfort and warmth of traditional with the clean lines and understated colors of contemporary. The result would be the streamlined spaces that radiate harmony. It is all about meeting in the middle, but at the same time , it is not boring or middle of the road.

Transitional appeals to those of us who like having the best of both worlds: You are a bit different from the traditional which was a comfortable style growing up, but you have the freedom to freshen it as you might like! You can update it indefinitely to reflect current trends and yet it ages well.

Transitional furniture styles

Generally transitional presents a style between contemporary and traditional. You have freedom to mix in a couple of pieces from other styles as long as they do not dominate the look from the casual character.

Colors for Transitional

The transitional look does not work well for those who just love bold color! Warm neutrals are generally the rule. Creams and taupes, tans and khaki, along with grays, and an occasional hint of chocolate or espresso brown for balance are the strength of the transitional design. Patterns, if used at all, should be understated. No bright prints or florals are found in this design palette. Transitional is considered to be monochromatic.

Transitional Living Room

Transitional furnishings still have crisp profiles and traditional style. Gentle curves as well as rigid lines work off each other to create energy.

You do not have to leave older furniture styles by the wayside, but are using updated versions, such as a modern wing chair in a lighter cotton color. The scale is still large enough to feel inviting and the seating cushioned and comfy. You want guests to flop down and settle in.

Flooring in transitional will be made with more natural woods, stone, tile, rugs and carpeting, still in quiet neutral colors.

Accessories for Transitional

Transitional accents have the thought that less is more. Pieces are larger, and plainer in character as compared to the traditional character. They should be large enough not to be lost in the space but clutter definitely doesn't t not belong here. Transitional style un-complicates our life!

Above all, a transitional space should feel very restful.

Does your room have the character of Transitional? It is one of the most used styles today! If you need a room update, give us a call and we will be glad to help you!
