Size of Mattress

Picking the Right Mattress

There are several sizes of mattresses available today, but the most standard size is the Queen Size. It is 60″ wide by 80″ long. This allows for 2 adult bodies 30″ in width for laying on their back. The full size bed, or as it was called a double bed, is just 54″ wide and with today’s adult body size, 27″ is pretty narrow to sleep in. Many people would have to lay on their side to make a full bed work. The 30″ is better, but is the same size as a crib mattress, so still small!

The standard length of a twin and full is 74″. These two sizes are also available in extra long, which would be the same as a queen or king mattress at 80″. This is very useful when you have a small bedroom but a tall body! It will give them room to stretch out and their feet won’t be hanging off the end of the bed!

We find one of the biggest issues that causes an uncomfortable night’s sleep is partner movement. As one person moves, the bed movement interrupts the other person’s sleep. The smaller the bed, the more the bed reacts to changes in sleeping positions. It is always best to have as much space as possible, but that is many times dictated by the size of the room.

A room that is 12′ x 12′ could easily allow for a king size bed, depending on closet doors as well as the entry door.

This diagram shows a 12′ x12′ bedroom with a full size dresser, king bed and 2 nightstands. Your room may be set up differently, so it is always good to have us check your room dimensions when increasing your bed size, just to make sure that it will fit!]
