In the past you may have had a typical box spring under, supporting the mattress. You can still do that today. There are a few options with this choice. It can still come in regular height that is 9" tall box or in LOW Profile box, which is 3' shorter, making it closer to only 6" tall. Some people who are shorter prefer the low. Other people choose the low if the mattress height itself is taller. The end number for the overall height of the bed is what is most important. Is it comfortable for you to get up and off of?
Box Springs are not made how they once were, due to many reasons. In the "old days" they actually had a spring unit around the edge that helped relive the weight and stress put of the mattress. Since mattress are made differently these days, a box spring is now built as a solid foundation to support your mattress structure and give the bed the height you need, therefore it is now called a FOUNDATION.

A Link Spring Foundation would be another way to raise the mattress. This system works as a slat system to give support to the bed. Many people use this option when they want less "parts" or if the want more storage under the mattress. These bases give the same support if they have the proper number of slates for your size mattress and guests sleeping on it.
Now if you would like movement in your foundation- head tilt, lifting of the legs for better circulation, then you replace these foundations for an adjustable base. Both "box spring"/ foundation and adjustable base are not needed. You only need one or the other to give support for your mattress.
